British Minister of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Pays a Visit to CDUT ----2018-08-01
 

The morning of 24th July witnessed the visit to Chengdu University of Technology (CDUT) made by Mark Field , the British Minister of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and his entrourage, in accompany with major university leaders including the principal Gong Hao vice-principal Liu Shugen and the administrators of relevant departments and colleges as well as scientific researchers. During the visit, the two parties exchanged opinions on joint operation of schools and cooperative science and technology as well as innovation. The vice-president is the chairman of meeting conference.

 

 

The president said that the UK has long boasted of many Universities of high education, enjoying immense prestige worldwide so that there must be considerable practices which deserves our learning. We have focused on the internationalization of CDUT, especially the cooperation and exchanges in many fields such as science and education with British universities. The past years have seen our successful cooperation. Meanwhile, the university has made remarkable achievement in the research and development of such areas as geological environment protection and exploration. Especially after 2008 Sichuan earthquake, the experts in the university have achieved relevant research outcomes and made a great contribution to the control of geological hazards in regions subject to these natural disasters, exerting great influence both at home and abroad. Thus, we have broad prospect of cooperation. The principal hoped that taking the Minister’s visit as a starting point, we should strengthen the cooperation between CDUT and British universities in education and scientific research, so as to realize mutual benefit and shared development.

 

 

The minister said that science and technology along with innovation and cooperation are important parts in China-UK cooperation. 2014 witnessed the foundation of China-UK Newton Fund that is co-funded by the two countries. The fund has supported more than 800 China-UK cooperation projects which bring the most talented researchers and innovators in both counties together to study global issues. The two countries officially announced their strategies in science and technology as well as innovation and cooperation, marking a new stage in these fields over the last 40 years. It is in his hope that the two countries, drawing experience from past successful cooperation, make further cooperation in areas like joint operation of schools and the control of geological hazards.

 

 

          

 

 

After the conference, the minister and his entrourage paid a visit to National Professional Laboratory of Geological Hazard Prevention and Geological Environment Protection and listened to the report made by professor Fan Yimei about the China-UK international cooperation of National Natural Science Foundation. According to the report, the project is co-funded by NSFC, NERC, the Newton fund and ESRC, and its cooperation unit is the School of Earth and Ocean Science, Cardiff University, UK. By complementing each other’s strength, the two countries explore the evolution law of geological hazards with the change of time and space, and risk remarks, based on the research of geological hazard in Wenchuan after the earthquake. At present, we have published one treatise, 15 papers in SCI, five papers in Chinese core journals and acquired five invention patents.
